Why did we start Unable Records?
Well, its pretty simple really...its all about the music, and its all about the scene. One thing that I realized years ago, when I was in the band Point Blank, was that there are a tremendous number of excellent bands out there. These bands work tirelessly trying to get their music and their message out to anyone who will listen. Unfortunately, these bands are often never heard outside of their local areas, no matter how good they are. Bands like these are the backbone of the local punk scenes all over the country. Kids line up in the pouring rain to watch their favorite bands play in rented fire halls, VFW halls, and punk rock clubs. 5 bucks would get you hours of music by several different bands, and the people that you'd meet at these shows could become life long friends. I don't really need to explain what makes the scenes so special, anyone who has been a part of them already knows. If you go to shows, if you're in a band, if you write for a zine, you know why you do it. It's the same for us. I look at it this way: If Unable Records is successful I will be able to give these bands, the glue that holds the local scenes together, a chance to get the wider attention they deserve. I see it as my way of thanking them for their dedication to the scene, and creating what it is that we all enjoy so much. On the other side of the coin, if Unable fails, at least I will be able to say that I tried to give something back. That is important to me, because for all I put into the scene over the years, from my band to my former label, I always got more out of it than I put in...and I feel I owe a debt of gratitude for it. What do we do?
Like I said above, our goal at Unable Records is to make a contribution to the scene, and to help great bands get the wider exposure they deserve. In the furtherance of that goal, we view ourselves as not only a record label, but as a partnership as well, a co-op. We want to work together with as many bands, labels, zines, radio stations, venues, and people as possible to help expand the independent music and punk scenes in cities all over the country and the national scene as a whole. Our success is your success, and your success is our success! We are in this together!
To reach our goals, we partner with bands to release full length albums, EPs, splits, and complitations. We will also assist our partner bands with booking, both locally and while on tour. All profits made from a release are shared 50/50 with the bands involved. Our share of the money is always immediately reinvested in the label, so we can go back and do the whole thing again!
We also love to partner with other labels and distributors to form a co-operative for promoting, marketing, and selling each other's products. Partnerships are also available for zines, radio stations, venues, stores, and other such companies and organizations. Individuals can also get involved by joining our Street Team. Street Team members assist us in focusing our tasks into local areas, and are rewarded with a robust incentive program offering both free stuff and cash rewards!
